There are few things more satisfying than leaving a facial with that unmistakable post-treatment glow: skin refreshed, phone still tucked away, and the rest of the day feeling a little lighter. It’s one of the most intentional forms of self-care because it gives your skin focused attention while giving you a rare moment to pause. But the benefits of a facial are not shaped solely by the treatment room. What you do in the hours and days that follow plays an important role in how your skin responds, recovers, and continues to improve. At Aesthetic Associates Centre, we believe guidance outside of the office is just as important as the care you receive during your appointment. From what to skip that evening to how to protect your skin the next morning, consider this your facial aftercare guide: clear, practical, and designed to help you get the most from your treatment.
Why Is Facial Aftercare Important?
A facial may feel relaxing, but your skin is doing real work afterward. Depending on your treatment, your skin may be freshly exfoliated, extra hydrated, more receptive to product, or slightly more sensitive than usual. This is not the moment to test a new serum, book a hot yoga class, or go straight into a full face of makeup.
The goal is simple: keep the skin clean, calm, hydrated, and protected while it settles. The right facial aftercare helps support your skin barrier, reduce unnecessary irritation, and protect the results you just invested in.
Facial Aftercare: The First 72 Hours
First 24 Hours: Protect and Pause
The first day after your facial is all about letting your skin recover without interruption.
Avoid touching your face or picking at extractions. It is also important not to lean your skin against anything that could introduce bacteria, such as your phone, pillowcase, or hands. If we incorporated extractions into your treatment plan, it can be tempting to inspect every pore. But picking can increase the risk of irritation, infection, and scarring.
Makeup is best avoided for at least 24 hours. Your skin has just been cleansed, treated, and in many cases, exfoliated or extracted. Giving it a makeup-free window allows the skin to breathe and recover without additional layers sitting on the surface.
This is also the time to skip anything that creates heat or heavy sweating. Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and intense workouts can leave freshly treated skin feeling flushed, irritated, or congested. Instead, cleanse with lukewarm water, pat dry with a clean towel, and avoid scrubbing or over-cleansing. Your routine should be minimal: a gentle cleanser, a calming moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher if you are going outside.
24–48 Hours: Hydrate and Soothe
By the second day, your skin may look calm and refreshed, but it can still be more sensitive than it appears. Continue avoiding retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, physical scrubs, alcohol-based toners, and strong exfoliating products. Even if these are part of your regular routine, reintroducing them too soon can disrupt the skin barrier and create dryness, redness, or irritation.
Focus on hydration and protection. A gentle, fragrance-free cleanser is ideal. Follow up with a hydrating serum such as hyaluronic acid if your skin feels tight or dry. We also recommend finishing with a non-comedogenic moisturizer, a formula designed to hydrate without clogging pores. SPF remains non-negotiable during the day.
48–72 Hours: Reintroduce With Intention
As you move into the 48 to 72-hour window, your skin should begin to feel more settled. Continue to avoid heat, heavy sweating, and active ingredients if your skin still feels sensitive, dry, tight, or flushed. If your esthetician gave you specific instructions, follow those first.
After 72 hours, you may begin returning to your normal skincare routine if your skin is calm. Reintroduce active ingredients one at a time rather than restarting everything at once.
