The use of neurotoxin can also be used to slenderize the face when patients have fullness related to enlarged masseter muscles, often caused from grinding or bruxism.  This injections can also reduce problems with TMJ conditions.

Botox Procedure

The procedure works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles.

Typically a small amount of Botox® is injected into the area of the wrinkle. Botox® works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them.

The result is the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. The effects of a Botox® treatment will start to take effect within 5-7 days and reach full effect at 2 weeks.

Generally, the treatment will last approximately three to six months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

Recovery Process

There is minimal concerns after neurotoxin injections.  We instruct the patients for 24 hours to not exercise and not drink alcohol.  In addition, patients need to keep their head upright for 2 hours after the injections.

Patients usually return for another treatment when they notice the muscles begin to return in function and movement.

Samuel Shatkin Jr., MD is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and performs all aspects of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He specializes in creating a customized approach to looking your best, which may include using multiple modalities which Dr. Shatkin refers to as ‘Combination Rejuvenation’.
