What Are Injectable Dermal Fillers? 

Injectable fillers aim to replenish lost volume in areas affected by aging, restoring facial contours for a more youthful appearance. However, they are not limited to aging concerns—fillers are also used with younger individuals to enhance facial symmetry. These versatile treatments sculpt and contour various facial areas like the jawline, nose, lips, cheeks, and chin, offering options for those hesitant about more invasive plastic surgery, such as a rhinoplasty or facelift.

Injectable fillers come in various compositions, but our hyaluronic acid-based options, like JUVÉDERM® and Restylane®, are the most common. Hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar molecule, helps restore moisture to the skin and add volume. The main difference between the two is the consistency, as Juvéderm is gel-like and is often used to smooth lines. Restylane is more granular and is primarily used to add volume. Another dermal filler that we provide is Sculptra®. Instead of hyaluronic acid, this filler contains poly-L-lactic acids. This causes the skin cells to produce more collagen, which is crucial in maintaining youthful, smooth skin.

What Can I Expect During a Dermal Filler Treatment?

Typically, these sessions are brief and are completed within a single office visit. Before the injections, we will apply a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. We will then administer the filler through several injections with an ultra-fine needle. The process is relatively painless, though you may experience a mild stinging sensation during the injection.

Thanks to the minimally invasive nature of the treatment, the recovery time is minimal. Following the procedure, we recommend that you follow these aftercare guidelines to aid in healing:

• Refrain from strenuous activities or exercise for the first day or two.
• Avoid sun exposure or using tanning beds.
• If you experience swelling, gently apply a cold pack.
• Avoid alcohol and stay hydrated.
• Use gentle skin care products.
• Minimize touching the treated area for the first few days unless instructed otherwise.
• If Sculptra is used, gentle massaging of the treated area is needed multiple times daily to minimize any hardening of soft tissue.

How Long Do the Results Last?

You can see a noticeable difference immediately after your procedure, with full effects in a few weeks. However, to achieve your desired results with Sculptra®, we recommend three sessions over a period of a few months.

These dermal treatment options offer beautiful but temporary results. The longevity of your result will vary based on the specific filler used, the treatment area, the specific dosage, and how your body metabolizes the injections. On average, hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane® last six to 12 months, whereas Sculptra® lasts two years or more.

One of the significant advantages of dermal fillers is their temporary nature, granting you the flexibility to choose treatment-to-treatment whether to continue. You have the option to discontinue at any time, and if you choose to stop, the effects gradually diminish. The treatment is entirely on your terms and offers remarkable facial improvements without requiring invasive surgery.

Are Injectable Dermal Fillers Safe?
